Expect Respect

Expect Respect is a drama based peer education project that aims at engaging young people in a discussion about legal issues and the laws dealing with relationships and sexual relations. The project will train at least 8 young people, between the ages of 18 and 21, to become Expect Respect Peer Educators. The peer educators will then work together with lawyers in delivering the Expect Respect workshops to young people.

PILOT GENDER ANALYSIS WORKSHOPS WITH WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES

The pilot workshops will provide women with disabilities attending with an introduction to gender analysis. Participants will consider key concepts and a selection of gender analysis frameworks, approaches, tools and questions. Opportunities will be provided for participants to apply and further develop their gender analysis skills through the application of selected tools to policy, project, service delivery and community related case studies. The workshops will also provide an introduction to important international instruments including Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol. Registration is free and will include a light morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Participants must meet their own travel and accommodation expenses.

Prader-Willi Syndrome Workshop

The workshop is about 'understanding the person, understanding the syndrome' and will be presented by Linda Thornton, National Director of the PWS Association of New Zealand. The cost is $25 (including lunch) or free for individuals living with disability and their families (although a voluntary $10 contribution towards catering would be appreciated). Special Olympics 2010 National Games

Adelaide will host the 2010 Special Olympics National Games for athletes from all over Australia. Events will include athletics, aquatics, basketball, bocce, football (soccer), golf, gymnastics, sailing, tennis and tenpin bowling. Equestrian will also be included in the National Games as a demonstration sport.

Towards Social Inclusion Conference

The conference will cover issues such as what government and non-government organisations are doing to make social inclusion reality, details of the initiatives highlighted as best practice in the Social Inclusion Toolkit, how governments and the third sector can work together to build a more inclusive society, and strategies for weaving a social inclusion focus into policies and programs. Attendees will take away a greater understanding of Australia’s social inclusion agenda, strategies for weaving a social inclusion focus into policies and programs going forward, a greater understanding of other sectors with whom it is important to collaborate, and practical advice on how to focus your organisations work to build a more socially inclusive Australia.

Able Australia Services is proud to be hosting the 8th National Deafblind Conference - a major calendar event for people with deafblindness, their families and service providers - on behalf of the Australian Deafblind Council (ADBC.)
